While reading Philippines 2:12-14 recently in preparation for a session I am teaching in the Western North Carolina Prayer Conference next month, I was struck by the words “One thing I do…” and considered that it is odd for a minister to make such a statement. The reason I say this is that by nature, it is my humble opinion that ministers are multi-taskers of the highest degree! Depending on the particular needs of the church, you will find pastors teaching classes, organizing transportation for parishioners, setting up the pot-luck after services, printing the bulletins, preparing the sermon, visiting the hospital, etc….you get the point?

Through the years, I have noticed that most ministers either lack the available and willing personnel or have not invested the strategic time and energy to train people for ministry involvement. As such, the minister is overburdened with the task of waiting on the tables for the Grecians widows in Acts 6 while he should be devoted to prayer and study of the Word.

Though I may sound trite and difficult, I challenge ministers to seriously consider this phrase — “one thing I do…” Do you know what that is? What is the ONE THING you do best and are you giving your full attention to the development of that. In my reading of Exodus this month, I’m reminded that Moses’ father in law counseled him against handling everything alone because it was not wise for him or the people. This is good advice for us all. What would happen if each of us were focused on our ONE THING and delegated the remaining, necessary tasks to another?
